When Lions, Buffaloes and Crocodiles Attack—At the Same Time
Every now and then, a viral video comes along that is truly remarkable—not because Uncle Cletus was that drunk, not because the little kitty was that cute—but because the events depicted are among the likes of which humans rarely have the privilege to see.
Enter the video above. Entitled "Battle at Kruger," it was filmed by a an incredibly lucky safari group parked outside of a South African watering hole. It all starts when a few cape buffaloes—calves in tow—unwittingly stumble upon a group of lionesses on the hunt. I really don't want to spoil it, but let's just say that soon afterwards a crocodile gets involved, a 300-pound lioness gets tossed into the air like a bean bag, and the ending would make Rocky himself shed a tear of admiration. Lesson learned? Nothing knows the true meaning of revenge as well as a herd of angry cape buffalo. —John Mahoney
(FYI: The video is long, but so worth the wait).

That was pretty crazy. I liked the flying lion.

Incredible... We humans should remember Martin Fierros sayings "los hermanos seasn unidos, esa es la ley primera..." (talking about being united under equals being stronger)

Africa's a tough country. I've been in quite a few reserves here and you see things that take your breath away sometimes. I won't trade it for anything in the world.

What happened to the calf? What did the croc bite? I always wondered why the buffalo didn't fight back, what are their horns for?!
Posted by: Dave M | June 11, 2007 at 01:11 PM
That video is incredible. It's truly an animal war of sorts. On a random note, it's funny because I have a huge fear of cougars so if a cougar had been involved, I would probably have ended up hiding under my desk afterwards..hehe.
Posted by: mina | June 11, 2007 at 05:53 PM
That calf is done for anyway. Don't matter if they saved it, it will end up getting left behind or not getting enough to eat along the way, making it another easy target. That is if it doesn't die of bleeding/infection/etc. before that.

That is not buffaloe, they are bison.
(stupid americans)
Posted by: lee | June 11, 2007 at 07:41 PM
@lee: It's a Cape (or African) buffalo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_Buffalo

This is why animals are amazing they can't make or say some of the stupid comments like the ones about this video clip the one can't see the croc the other one thinks africa is a country and the other can't spot sarcasim.
Posted by: Robin | June 12, 2007 at 06:50 AM
spelling sarcasm is fairly difficult as well...
Posted by: john | June 12, 2007 at 10:55 AM
what? what's going on? there was a crocodile? there were bison and buffaloes? what's the difference between a lion and a lioness? what's sarcasim?
Posted by: Sage | June 12, 2007 at 04:53 PM
That was simply amazing. Wow.
Posted by: Brittany | June 13, 2007 at 02:45 PM

Sorry Stupergenious, I meant Lee.
Posted by: Duesouth | June 14, 2007 at 12:33 PM
Yes, surprising to see a prey animal fight back as a group. Surely such a gene would have a survival value and would tend to persist yet we seldom see it manifested. Interesting that the lions were smart enough not to seek refuge in the water which would be a natural retreat

Hey Lee,
You going to apologize ?
You've not only shown your own stupidity by calling a buffalo a bison, but you've shown your own small-minded prejudice against the Americans.
Anything to show the US in a bad light, even if you have to make it up, eh?
Posted by: Shadow Merchant | June 18, 2007 at 03:53 PM
That was absolutely enthralling! I was amazed that the calf walked away after all that rough treatment.

Posted by: John | June 24, 2007 at 11:18 PM
those are water buffalo aka caribou
Posted by: JIMMY BROOKS | July 07, 2007 at 12:37 PM
A caribou? yeah for sure, since everything occured near Lac St-Jean, near Montréal in the WWAmerica... And it's not a crocodile... probably an aquatic squirrel called a beaver. And for the lions... no. We don't have them in Canada state of the USA. It was a group of assurance salesmen. (not female, look at the tails) Damn... come on... edukation is bless...
"La culture, c'est comme la confiture... moins on en a, plus on l'étend." (siberian bushman proverb). And Sacasm is a province of U.S.A, like Alaska and Antartica.

That was great! This speaks volumes for the number of (human) bystanders who watch someone being attacked and do nothing because they do not want to get involved. CHEERS FOR THE NON-HUMAN ANIMAL KINGDOM!
Posted by: Ruth | August 05, 2007 at 11:18 AM
The prey's is getting tired of being hunted.
They begin to fight back this one of the time!
Posted by: Chi Chu | August 07, 2007 at 10:41 PM
That was simply awesome, I had to view it twice to see the lioness being thrown away. I thank my cousin for sending me the link -- "Unity is Strength!" I've never seen anything like this.
Posted by: Slingshot | August 08, 2007 at 02:40 AM
@John,
No those are not Water Buffalo. You can tell they are African or Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) because the horns come straight out the side and wrap up. Water buffalo (Bubalus bubalus) horns point backwards.
